The trek offers breathtaking views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, charming Gurung and Magar villages, and lush rhododendron forests, all within the Annapurna Conservation Area(ACAP). It's ideal for those with limited time who seek Himalayan beauty and cultural experience without high-altitude challenges.

Trek Insights:

  • Permits: TIMS and ACAP Entry Permit.
  • Initial Ascent(Birethanti to Ulleri): Begins with a gentle trail alongside the Modi Khola, followed by a steep stone staircase climb of over 3,000 steps to reach Ulleri. Offers scenic views of farmlands and traditional Magar settlements.
  • Forest Trails(Ulleri to Ghorepani): Enters dense rhododendron and oak forests with misty trails in spring and chances to spot wildlife. Ghorepani is a large village with good accommodation options and spectacular views.
  • Poon Hill Viewpoint: An early morning hike to the ridge(3,210m) gives panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, including Machhapuchhre(Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Nilgiri.
  • Descent to Tadapani and Ghandruk: After Poon Hill, the trail continues through lush forests to Tadapani, then descends into the Gurung heartland of Ghandruk-a picturesque village known for its culture and heritage.

Local People and Cultures:

  • Magar people inhabit Ulleri and Ghorepani. They are known for their history as brave warriors and their service in the British and Indian Gurkha armies.
  • Gurung communities dominate Tadapani and Ghandruk. Renowned for their hospitality, bravery and rich cultural heritage.
  • Traditional Houses: Stone-built with slate roofs, often surrounded by flower gardens.
  • Dress and ornaments: Elder women in Ghandruk still wear traditional woolen garments, nose rings, and silver jewelry.
  • Language: Magar and Gurung dialects, along with Nepali.
  • Festivals: Dashain, Tihar, Lhosar(Tamu Lhosar among Gurung), and Maghe Sankranti are celebrated with music and dance.
  • Religions: A blend of Buddhism, Hinduism and animistic practices. Prayer flags and Buddhist chortens are common.

Vegetation Zones:

As the trail moves from lowland to mid-hill and lower alpine zones, it passes through rich ecological gradients.

Subtropical Zone(1,000 - 2,000m): Found in lower areas like Nayapul and Tikhedhunga.

  • Vegetation: Terraced fields of rice, millet, maize and forests of sal, pine and bamboo.
  • Wildlife: Monkeys, birds and butterflies.

Temperate Zone(2,000m - 3,000m): Prominent in areas like Ulleri to Ghorepani and Tadapani.

  • Vegetation: Dense rhododendron, oak, and magnolia forests. In Spring(March-April), rhododendrons bloom in red, pink and white.
  • Wildlife: Himalayan langurs, musk deer, barking deer, Himalayan monals(Nepal's National bird).

Lower Alpine Zone(above 3,000m): Seen during the early morning hike to Poon Hill.

  • Vegetation: Shrubs, small alpine herbs, dwarf rhododendrons.
  • Viewpoints: Open ridgelines with Himalayan vistas.

Ecological And Cultural Harmony:

The Ghorepani - Poon Hill Trek lies entirely within the Annapurna Conservation Area Project(ACAP), which promotes sustainable tourism, biodiversity protection and local community empowerment. Villagers are actively involved in conservation and eco-tourism initiatives, maintaining a delicate balance between tourism and environment.
