The Upper Mustang Trek is a captivating journey into the remote and ancient Himalayan Kingdom of Lo Manthang, located in the trans-Himalayan region of northwestern Nepal. Once a restricted and independent kingdom, Upper Mustang remained isolated from the outside world until 1992, preserving its rich Tibetan Buddhist culture, centuries-old monasteries and fortress-like villages. The trek follows the Kali Gandaki River Gorge, through a dramatic landscape of wind-eroded cliffs, colorful rock formations, hidden caves and arid valleys, unlike any other part of Nepal. The trail leads to the legendary walled city of Lo Manthang (3,840m), the cultural heart of Mustang, where you can explore royal palaces, ancient gompas and traditional Tibetan-style homes. Due to its location in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, the Upper Mustang trek is ideal even during the monsoon season(May to August).
